Clays has science-based targets approved by the SBTi

We are pleased to announce that our greenhouse gas emissions targets have now been officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), becoming the first book printer with validated net-zero targets.

The SBTi is a global body defining and promoting best practice in science-based target-setting, independently assessing companies’ targets for alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Having committed in March 2022, Clays submitted targets in April 2023 and after careful review, the SBTi has verified compliance to the criteria and recommendations following the most ambitious designation available through the SBTi process.

Clays has committed to:

Overall Net-Zero Target

  • Reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050

Near-Term Targets

  • Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46.2% by 2030 from a 2019 base year
  • Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 27.5% within the same timeframe

Long-Term Targets

  • Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year
  • Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% within the same timeframe

Clays CEO, Edoardo Cuomo, stated: “This is a very exciting time for Clays. My family has always been focussed on the impact of our business on the environment so as soon as we had an opportunity to accelerate our ambition to the next level we wanted to take it. The team have worked really hard on this project for more than 2 years, and I have to thank them a lot because without them all of this wouldn’t have been possible. The road is still long but I am sure that all the players involved in our industries are committed to making progress together.”

We would like to thank everyone internally and our external partners who have been instrumental in reaching this milestone. With our targets now validated, we aim to move forward with collaborative initiatives with our suppliers, customers and partners across the value chain to achieve these goals.

We will be publishing further details on our targets and implementation plans on our website.
