A worms tale
A worms tale

Here at Clays we incinerate all of our paper dust created through book production into ash to reduce its volume.  In total we produce around 40 tonnes of paper dust ash per year. Where as in the past all of this waste went to landfill, Clays have recently found a more environmentally friendly way to dispose of it…..

ORM North Norfolk, a local worm farmer, produces a product called Norfolk compost. This is a wholly organic, locally produced, general purpose soil conditioner.

We provide ORM North Norfolk with our dust ash which they then use to spread over their worm beds. The worms mix the ash in with the other bedding materials they live in. The dust ash is a good source of potash, which is a natural fertiliser.  The worm cast is also mixed in with compost produced from garden waste, wood, paper and card.  The final product is a soil conditioner which contains all the nutrients, minerals, bacteria and micro-organisms needed to benefit plant growth.

So…. from tree, to paper, to books and back to tree, Clays completes the circle

Celebrity Author kicks off Clays new Build!

Michael O’Mara has had an absolutely amazing twelve months. The growth of their ‘books’ series and new non-fiction titles has caused sales to soar.

Currently, they have four non-fiction titles in the top ten, all of which are printed by Clays, including Anything Goes (autobiography of John Barrowman) and I Before E. This is an astounding feat for an independent publisher in a market dominated by the publishing giants.

The ‘Books’ series shows no sign of slowing down and for the four major titles (Boys’, Girls’, Mums’ and Dads’ Book) we have printed in excess of one million copies.

Production consultant David Bann said:
“Our highly successful series including Boys’ Book, Girls’ Book, Mums’ Book, Dads’ Book etc. have all been major bestsellers in the last year. The two colour blocking on the cases presents production challenges, both in the blocking capacity needed and maintaining the quality, and Clays have responded magnificently.

To avoid going out of stock, we have need very fast reprints which Clays has achieved.

The series is now continuing with Grannies’ Book and Things To Do With Mum for Mother’s Day and Grandads’ Book for Father’s Day. In the Autumn we are publishing Husbands’ Book, Wives’ Book, Cooks’ Book and Gardeners’ Book.”
